My background is in fashion. I was one of the founders of Marc O’ Polo sportswear and Scampi swimwear.

Some years ago I started making furniture as my wife and daughter took over most of my work at Scampi. However, a severe cancer came in between. Scampi was sold and my career in small-scale furniture production ended.

Now I am back and with outdoor furniture. I have always loved the classical director’s chair. The one Karen Blixen or Hemingway were sitting in outside a tent in Africa. I decided to make a slightly modernized version; a bit wider to be more comfortable both for dinner and lounge, a slightly angled back, and wider armrests.

The wood? Oak, eucalyptus, acacia, or teak? We have had a sofa bench for 40 years outside our summer house on an island in the Stockholm archipelago. It stands there all year round in sun, rain, snow, and hard wind at times and is as beautiful and sturdy today as back then. It is made of teak, the hardest of woods. It is silver grey as it has not been oiled every year.

So, I decided to make the Atolmar chair in Grade A teak. The craftsmen in Jawa, Indonesia are the best in making beautiful, quality teak furniture, sanded by hand to perfection and smoothness.

The teak we source is from government-certified plantations. Our teak is kiln-dried twice. First as sawed planks and a second time as a readymade chair. It is very important to take out the moisture of the teak. If this is not done properly, screws and other hardware will come out as the wood shrinks and joints will open or crack.

The seat and back are made of Sunbrella acrylic fabric. I am basically a cotton man, but when it comes to fabric for outdoor furniture nothing beats acrylic fabric. It is water and stain-resistant, UV/fade-resistant, mold/mildew resistant.
